Planning a wine tasting in Jumilla? You can visit a working winery, taste local wines and explore the town in one day. If you are staying in Murcia or Alicante, the journey fits comfortably into a day trip by car.
Start by booking your winery visit. Then check the route from your accommodation and leave time for lunch or a walk. This guide explains what to expect and how to organise your day.
Why choose Jumilla for a wine tasting?
Jumilla is a wine region in south-east Spain, best known for Monastrell. Visiting a winery helps you understand the connection between the grape, the landscape and the wine in your glass.
You can see the production spaces and ask about the choices behind each wine. You do not need any previous wine knowledge. A guided tasting gives you a chance to learn at your own pace.
What to expect from a winery visit
Each winery offers a different experience. Some visits focus on tasting, while others include a tour of the production spaces.
Before booking, check the duration, language and food options. Also ask which areas you will visit. A winery tour does not always include a walk through vineyard plots.
The Carchelo Experience
Bodegas Carchelo is a family winery at the foot of the Sierra del Carche. Our two-hour experience combines a winery tour with a guided tasting.
A member of our own team leads the visit. Your host brings years of practical experience and wine training to the conversation.
First, we explore the small experimental vineyard beside the winery. We then visit the working production area, barrel room and bottling area. Along the way, we explain how we work with Monastrell and make our wines. There is plenty of time for questions.
Finally, we taste five of our finest Carchelo wines. Each guest also receives an individual selection of cheeses and Iberian cured meats.
The experience costs €30 per adult and is available in English. Please book in advance and confirm your date and time before travelling.
Our standard visit includes the experimental vineyard beside the winery. It does not include a tour of our outlying vineyard plots.
Getting to your wine tasting in Jumilla
Bodegas Carchelo is outside Jumilla town centre, in the countryside near the Sierra del Carche. A car or transport arranged in advance is the simplest way to reach us.
These approximate driving times can help you plan:
- Murcia city: 50–60 minutes.
- Alicante city: 1 hour 10 minutes–1 hour 25 minutes.
- Orihuela: 1 hour–1 hour 15 minutes.
- Mar Menor: 1 hour 15 minutes–1 hour 25 minutes, using San Javier or Los Alcázares as reference points.
Your exact starting point, route and traffic will affect the journey. Therefore, check live directions before leaving and enter Bodegas Carchelo as your destination.
If everyone wants to taste the wines, arrange transport for the return journey. Alternatively, choose a designated driver who will not drink alcohol.
Turn your winery visit into a day trip
A morning visit leaves time for lunch in Jumilla. Afterwards, you can walk through the historic centre or visit a local landmark.
The castle is one option to consider. However, check opening times and access before adding it to your plans. Remember to allow for the journey between the winery and the town.
You do not need to fill the whole day with activities. A winery visit, lunch and a short walk make a relaxed itinerary.
