Master of Wine Tim Atkin has just published a new report about wines from Spain, including wine-growing regions of Spain such as Navarra, La Mancha, the Basque Country and the south east spanish mediterranean area. He tasted 6 wines from Bodegas Carchelo, highlighting the new elaboration, GUARAFÍA, with 94 points.
These have been Tim Atkin’s ratings and tasting notes for the Bodegas Carchelo wines:
Guarafía (94 points): Tim Atkin and his tasting team describe it as “Garnacha from a single vineyard with beautiful strawberry fruit and a touch of cola. The oak influence is minimal – the wine was fermented in open barrels and aged six months in foudres – and offers just a little structure. There is wonderful lift but the wine loses nothing in concentration”.
Altico (92 points): “A further 12 months in bottle before release. It is a very varietal wine with licorice, red berry fruit, cloves and spice. The palate is seductively silky, velvety with the right balance of tannic grip. It offers all the intensity and complexity of Jumilla”.
Muri Veteres (92 points): “Aromatic and pretty on the nose with strawberry fruit and peppery notes, this is an intensely appealing Monastrell that has spent 12 months in foudres and further time in bottle beforerelease. Tannins are present but will soften with time. It’s a plummy, mouthfilling and muscular wine that will evolve further”
Selecto (91 points): “With a true Mediterranean character, this is a rich red blend (45% Monastrell, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Syrah and 5% Tempranillo) that is ready to drink now. Framed with good quality French oak, there are attractive balsamic notes combined with juicy blueberry fruit and some coastal garrigue. Very polished.”
Carchelo Viñedos de Pueblo (90 points): “A youthful and vibrant Monastrell with only a short passage of five months in 225-litre and 500-litre French oak. Semi-carbonic maceration contributes to an explosion of red cherry fruit and rose aromas with a very juicy and lively palate and chalky freshness on the finish. A modern Jumilla that also reflects its viticultura”
Carchelo Ciento80 (89 points).
